Apparently, iOS 4.3 introduced a bug – carried over to iOS 4.3.1 – in A2DP Bluetooth profile. The symptom of this bug is uneven sound: the left side is quite noticeably louder than the right. Your headset’s additional features – my new Nokia BH-905i Bluetooth Stereo Headset has bass booster and stereo widening – may also fail. I found a way to get around this irritating problem. The solution is to let the headset initiate the Bluetooth connection to iPhone (or iPad).

I am assuming the headset has already been paired with iPhone. I am using the BH-905i but these steps should work with any Bluetooth headsets with A2DP support.

Enable Bluetooth on iPhone.

Turn on headset by pressing and holding the Multi-function button until you hear the tone indicating its ON status.

Check iPhone to make sure headset is not connected.

Press the Play button on the headset. This should connect the headset with iPhone and you will not encounter the bug.

This previous step will only work if iPhone was the last device connected to the headset. If the headset was connected to another device earlier, pressing the Play button will only make it try to connect to that device. Follow the next few steps.

If the headset is connected to the previous device, disconnect them.

Go to the Bluetooth menu on iPhone and select the headset to initiate a connection.

When the connection is made, turn off Bluetooth on iPhone.

Wait for a few seconds – i suggest at least 5 seconds – then turn Bluetooth on again on iPhone.

Make sure headset is not automatically connected to iPhone. Press the Play button on the headset to initiate a connection. Once it’s connected, you are good to go!

Update 2

The one thing that i missed dearly when i updated my iPhone 3GS from iOS 4.0.1 to 4.0.2 was the loss of the ability to do native internet tethering. When AT&T finally decided to allow tethering for iPhone users, it came with some caveats. In order to tether, you not only have to sign up with one of the new limited data plans, you also have to pay an extra $20 a month to enable tethering. Naturally, i refused to cough up more dough for the shitty reception that i have been getting so i went the “rogue” route to enable tethering on my iPhone.

Prior to updating the firmware to iOS 4.0.2, i was able to set up tethering by installing a debian package that modified CommCenter – allowing iOS to accept an unsigned profile – and then installed a customized profile. This method worked fine until i upgraded my iPhone to iOS 4.0.2.

TetherMe package in Cydia

I have read about a paid Cydia package called TetherMe which allows native tethering on iOS 4.0.1 devices. Because there was no indication that this $1.99 app would work on iOS 4.1, i held off on installing it until i chanced upon this website while i was searching for a way to enable native tethering in iOS 4.1. As i did not want to pay for something that would not work, i decided to give this hacked package a try. After installing the hacked TetherMe, i was able to get native tethering working! Immediately after testing it, i uninstalled the hacked version of TetherMe and purchased the legitimate copy of TetherMe from the Cydia store. I am happy to say that the newer version of TetherMe (version 1.3-16) works perfectly!

A little over a year ago, i bought Gas Cubby for my iPhone. Gas Cubby is a handy little tool for figuring the gas mileage of my 2002 Audi A4. Since i bought the app, i have been religiously updating it each time i fill up my car. One very nice feature of Gas Cubby is its ability to generate gas mileage related statistics and graphs. So after a year, here are the gas mileage statistics and graphs for my car.

Gas mileage statistics.

Really abysmal average MPG: 17.96 Miles per gallon. The low MPG can probably be explained by the lack of long road trip. Between last November and now, i only went on one long road trip (to Orcas Island). The maximum MPG of 23.54 was probably due to the Orcas Island trip.

MPG over a year.

The MPG graph indicates a gradual decline in MPG since April 2009. Prior to April 2009, i was living in West Seattle. On the days that i drove my car to work, more than half of the journey was spent on I-5 and local highway. Since April, i have been living in Queen Anne and i typically take the local routes. Even though the local routes are generally less congested, there are a lot of stop lights. It is clear that the frequent stop and go is not helping my car’s gas mileage.

I captured a 15-second video on my Apple iPhone. Synchronized it to Apple iPhoto. Created a Apple Mobile Me gallery using iPhoto. Guess what happened when i tried to watch the 15-second clip using Safari (on Apple’s latest OS offering Snow Leopard 10.6.1)? Safari completely froze, with the spinning beach ball. Where is the “Crash resistant” feature of Safari that is being touted by Apple? According to Apple,

Safari 4 in Snow Leopard is even more resistant to crashes. It turns out that the number one cause of crashes in Mac OS X is browser plug-ins. So Apple engineers redesigned Safari to make plug-ins run separately from the browser. If a plug-in crashes on a web page, Safari keeps running. Just refresh the page and get going again.

Safari did not crash but it’s not responding, not even to a defibrillator.

My Safari session did not exactly crash but it was frozen like that piece of pork tenderloin i have in my freezer.

Quicktime Plugin for Safari – what a hog!

I then attempted to access the same video clip using Firefox on my MacBook Air. Same problem. Tried it unsuccessfully on my Mac Pro (upgraded to Snow Leopard just a few days ago). Same problem exists on Smelly’s MBP as well. Looking at Activity Monitor, it’s apparent that Quicktime Plugin for Safari is the culprit, consistently taking almost 100% of CPU while the frozen Safari is still running. The only way to get out of the frozen Safari is by performing a force quit, which is Apple talk for UNIX’s “kill -9″.

Ironically, i am able to see the video clip without any problem using Firefox on my Windows XP work notebook!

Update 2009/07/08:
On top of purplera1n (version RC2) jailbreak, last night i used version 0.8 of ultrasn0w to unlock my iPhone. So far, i have not experienced any performance issue. I also installed Backgrounder (svn.r249) so that i can run apps in background. I tested iNap this morning by putting it in background and it worked perfectly!

Update 2009/07/06:
Looks like the unresponsive “slide to unlock” issue may be due to the unlock instead of jailbreak. After Mac OS X version of purplera1n was released, i did the jailbreak again but stopped short of performing the unlock with ultrasn0w. That problem did not reoccur.

Two days ago, iPhone 3GS was jailbroken by geohot, who was the first known person to unlock the original iPhone two years ago. The jailbreak tool purplera1n was initially released on the Windows platform only. The tool was simple enough to use: open iTunes 8.2, connect iPhone to Windows-based computer, run purplera1n, and while in the purplera1n tool, click on “make it ra1n”. After a few reboots, iPhone is jailbroken. As part of the process, a iPhone app called freeze is installed. Running “freeze” will install Cydia, which can then be used to install ultrasn0w to unlock the iPhone.

I managed to jailbreak and unlock my 32-GB iPhone 3GS using the method described above. Initially, i had problem with WiFi not working. I realized that it may be due to the bossprefs tool that i had installed. Upon uninstalling bossprefs, my iPhone was able to regain its WiFi functionality. The next problem i found, which can be attributed to either the jailbreak or the unlock, or both, was the unresponsive “slide to unlock” button. At times, i would say almost all the time, it would take more than 3 or 4 seconds before the i could slide to unlock my iPhone. It became quite irritating that i abandoned the jailbreak and unlock and restored the 3.0 firmware on my iPhone.

WTF!!! I, as in THE RECEIVER, never requested a hold. I want my iPhone 3G S now! Looks like Apple is making sure that everyone, including those that pre-ordered for delivery, will not get their iPhones until 6/19. That means i have to go to work on Friday instead of working from home. This sucks!

As widely reported, a feature to locate your iPhone, available only to subscribers of Apple’s MobileMe service, is live now.

There is now a new “Find My iPhone” icon on MobileMe’s Account settings page. Clicking on the icon takes me to the “Find My iPhone and Remote Wipe” page.

Find My iPhone page on MobileMe.

A map powered by Google displays the approximate location of my iPhone. Since my first generation iPhone does not have any GPS-capability, the accuracy is based on the nearby Wi-Fi signals and cellular signal.

If i have lost my iPhone, i can send a message to my iPhone.

Find My iPhone: Display a message.

The message shows up on my iPhone seconds later.

The same message persists on the home screen even after iPhone is unlocked. It will only go away by pressing OK. The Display a Message tool also has the ability to play a sound on the iPhone for 2 minutes, even if the iPhone is on silent mode. I suspect this feature will be very handy for those who can’t remember where they have placed their iPhones at home.

Another feature available on the Find My iPhone page is the ability to perform a remote wipe of an iPhone. According to MobileMe, doing a Remote Wipe “will permanently delete all media and data on your iPhone, restoring it to factory settings.” I may give this a try later.

Seattle Metro app tells me the estimated arrival time of my bus. This information is real-time. The screenshot was captured about 30 seconds before Bus Route 30 pulled into the bus stop.

The first thing i do after boarding the bus is to listen to my favorite tunes in iTunes.

While listening to the tunes, i check the Calendar for the events scheduled for that day.

I may also check the weather for the day using the Weather app. I usually do this before i leave the house.

Checking how my stocks are doing with the Stocks app. This morning, not so good.

The bus i rode on had some light smell of urine. I took note of that using the Notes app, rating the smell as 2 PSS (Pee Smell Scale). The scale goes from a neutral smell of 1 to a gas-mask-required smell of 10. So this morning’s ride was quite pleasant, unlike the vomit-inducing ride i had the previous evening.

If i am not sleepy, one thing i spend a lot of time doing is browsing for news using the Safari app.

If i get new mail notification, i will check my email with the Mail app.

I have a habit of dozing off when i am on the bus so launching the iNap app is the last thing i do before catching some Zs. iNap is really the most useful app that i have purchased and it’s only $0.99! It has saved me from missing my stops on several occasions.
